A Guide for Visitors and Touristsย
Planning a trip to the Pyramids or the Red Sea in 2026? Staying connected in Egypt has never been easier, but there are some new rules you should know to avoid any “signal surprises.”
๐ฑ Bringing Your Own Phone: The 90-Day Rule
As of January 21, 2026, Egypt has implemented a new governance system for mobile phones. Here is the good news for tourists:
Automatic Exemption: Your personal smartphone is exempt from any customs duties or registration for 90 days from the date of your entry.
No Airport Hassle: You don’t need to register your device at the airport customs anymore. It will work automatically with any local SIM.
For Long Stays: If you stay longer than 3 months, you must register your device and pay the applicable fees via the “Telefoni” app to keep it active on Egyptian networks.
๐ณ Getting a SIM Card: Physical vs. eSIM
eSIM (The 2026 Standard): All major Egyptian carriers (Vodafone, Orange, e&, and WE) now support eSIM. You can purchase and activate your plan via their official apps even before you arrive, for around $8โ$10.
Physical SIMs: Still widely available at dedicated kiosks in Cairo, Hurghada, and Sharm El Sheikh airports.
Tourist Lines: Ask for the “Tourist SIM.” It usually offers large data bundles (e.g., 30GB to 50GB) and is valid for 90 days to match your visa.
๐ฐ Estimated Costs
Mobile data in Egypt is very affordable. In 2026, a 40GB data package costs approximately EGP 450 (roughly $9โ$10).
